SEPUP™ Ecology

How and why do organisms interact with their environment and what are the effects of these interactions? What if the organisms aren’t native to the area?  Investigative phenomena within the lessons connect back to the issue and storyline.

Anchoring phenomenon: Introduced species are changing environments all around us. They can cause problems for people and affect biodiversity.

Examples explored include Nile perch, zebra mussels, and local examples, such as starlings, kudzu, and others identified by students and teachers. Students generate and answer questions such as: How do introduced organisms interact with their environments, what are the effects of these interactions, and what can be done to prevent harmful interactions?  

This unit builds towards and assesses PEs LS2-1, LS2-2, LS2-3, LS2-4, LS2-5, LS1-6, LS1-7 and is part of SEPUP's Issues and Science three-year middle school program. View all unit tools, including student books and teacher materials here.
