WORKSHOPS:
Data Literacy Toolkit for Science Teachers
From Issues and Science
Date: 3/7 | Time: 3:30p | Location: TBA
This session equips teachers with practical strategies, free resources, and tools to enhance students' data literacy, aligned with Michigan standards. Participants will explore data analysis practices, access diverse datasets, and receive a Lab-Aids activity with materials to support integrating data interpretation into their lessons.
What Do You Mean Most Life is Extinct? Past Patterns and Current Clues
From Science and Global Issues: Biology
Date: 3/8 | Time: 9:30a | Location: Meeting Room 101
Why is 99% of all life on Earth extinct? Are we in another mass extinction event right now? We will use image and data cards to identify patterns and investigate major extinction causes linked to environmental shifts. This activity fosters student discourse and pattern recognition. Strategies for supporting claims and differentiation will be shared, and participants will receive a card set for classroom use.
Make Student Thinking Visible with Talking Drawings: A Pollutant’s Journey on the Water Cycle
From Issues and Science
Date: 3/8 | Time: 1:00p | Location: Banquet Room 2
Initial understanding of the water cycle is often simpler than reality. We will use a talking drawing to identify prior knowledge and expand student understanding of the complexity of the water cycle by tracking a water drop and a pollutant particle using a revised model. Bring back a set of materials to use in your class.
