Designed for the NGSS, EDC Earth Science involves students by challenging them with thought-provoking investigations and questions they hear in the news or at their family dining table.

The course opens with an exciting excerpt from the novel Red Mars and mid-way through the year students prepare a news story and make predictions about what Earth will be like in the year 2100. 

In the End-of-Year Challenge students apply the knowledge they have gained during this course to prepare an essay or presentation predicting what Earth will be like when its interior cools completely.

Reviewing EDC Earth Science

As adoption committees prepare to review high school earth science curriculum options, we thought it would be helpful to gather all the resources for EDC: Earth Science in one place. Listed to the right are several commonly requested documents.
 

Using the CONSIDER-INVESTIGATE-PROCESS framework, students bring their own ideas to the forefront before considering a challenge question. From here students INVESTIGATE to gather and synthesize information from readings, demos, and activities; carry out research, collect, and analyze data; and communicate their thinking. Finally, in PROCESS, they share solutions, logic, and reasoning, sometimes reconsidering a conclusion after hearing from others.

HYDROSPHERE: WATER IN EARTH’S SYSTEMS UNIT (3-4 week unit)
Essential Question: Water is critical for all life on Earth. How does its movement and distribution affect our society and global economy?

ATMOSPHERE AND CLIMATE UNIT (5-8 week unit)
Essential Questions: What is the science behind global climate change, and what possible actions can we take to minimize its impact?

EARTH’S PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE UNIT (3-4 week unit)
Essential Questions: How did the Earth and planets form? How do we know what we know about the structure and composition of the Earth?

PLATE TECTONICS UNIT (5-7 week unit)
Essential Questions: How have plate tectonics shaped the current surface of the Earth? What hazards result from plate movement and why is it important to understand the potential dangers?

THE ROCK CYCLE UNIT (3-6 week unit)
Essential Questions: How and where are different types of rock formed? How do the forces of erosion and deposition affect human activities?

EARTH RESOURCES UNIT (3-6 week unit)
Essential Questions: How and where are fossil fuels and other valuable earth minerals formed? How has the location and use of these resources affected society and the environment?

Each program component references the others to form a cohesive learning system for teachers and students.
