To teach is to make a life long commitment to learning--for our students and for ourselves. Teachers must work hard to stay abreast of new science content and pedagogy, which is why most states typically require ongoing professional development for re-certification every five years. LAB-AIDS® can help teachers acquire new content and skills, whether you are a veteran teacher, new to the profession, or somewhere in between.
The LAB-AIDS® INSTITUTE seeks to help improve the way K-12 science is taught and learned by providing extraordinary support for curriculum, research and evaluation, and professional development. Science educators have come to trust LAB-AIDS® as a source of innovative, hands-on kits and inquiry-based, core science curriculum. We also offer a complete line of high-quality professional development and curriculum services.
Our Director Mark Koker:
Mark is the Director of the LAB-AIDS® Institute. He taught science in San Francisco Bay Area schools before joining the Science Education for Public Understanding Program (SEPUP), based at the Lawrence Hall of Science, University of California, Berkeley, in 1987. At SEPUP, he was a curriculum developer and assistant director, leaving to take his current position at LAB-AIDS® in 1999. His duties at LAB-AIDS® include the management of all curriculum and professional development efforts, working with more than 80 teacher-consultants at the company. He has done workshops for thousands of science teachers since the mid-1980s.
Mark has a B.S. in zoology from the University of California, Berkeley, an M.S. in Science Education from California State University, Hayward, and a Ph D in Education from the University of Southampton, Great Britain. His research interests include student adolescent decision-making about personal and societal issues, and current issues in STEM education policy and instruction. He lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife Denise, and has two adult sons.
A letter from our Director:
Welcome to the LAB-AIDS® Institute, the home for professional development and curriculum services at LAB-AIDS®!
We know it's not just about the kits. While we offer a comprehensive lineup of powerful, proven science curricula developed with support of funding agencies like the National Science Foundation, we also offer a variety of other services—from curriculum development, to research and evaluation, to professional development—to support these programs in your school and district.
Whether you are looking for a custom, hands-on unit for your eighth grade science class, a safety audit of your school science labs, or the latest in STEM professional development, we can help. Our consultants include experienced curriculum writers, professional evaluators, and effective staff developers, with experience at the classroom, district office, and college/university level. We have data and testimonials on the effectiveness of our services, from teachers in rural and urban schools—from Wyoming to New York city.
At the Institute, we seek to improve the way K-12 science is taught and learned by providing extraordinary support to our kits and curriculum programs. With all the attention given to test scores, new national standards, and other non-human objects , it is easy to lose sight of the fact that science—and science education—is a human endeavor, and that knowledge is a social construct. We invite you to learn and grow with us!
